Huron County Launches Comprehensive Land Use Planning Process

The process and plan aim to guide future growth and preserve agricultural land

Huron County, OH – Huron County leaders and community partners are embarking on a comprehensive Land Use Planning process designed to guide future development, protect valuable agricultural resources, and ensure the county remains a thriving place to live, work, and do business for generations to come.

The initiative is being led through a partnership between the Huron County Growth Partnership, Mannik & Smith Group, Inc., Huron County Soil & Water Conservation District, Huron County Planning Commission, and the Huron County Commissioners. The project is being made possible through grant funding provided by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

As Huron County continues to experience changing economic, residential, and agricultural needs, the Land Use Plan will serve as a roadmap for balancing growth and development.

“I was involved in the 2017 Land Use Plan and this update will be a lot more inclusive of the townships, agriculture leaders, and residents. Agriculture has long been a cornerstone of our local economy, and this planning process will help us identify opportunities for growth while protecting our farmland, natural resources, and rural character” states Tom Dunlap, Huron County Commissioner.

The planning process will assess current land use patterns, identify future opportunities and challenges, and establish a shared vision for how land throughout the county can be utilized in a way that supports economic development, housing, infrastructure, transportation, and agriculture.

A key component of the project will be extensive public participation. Residents, business owners, farmers, community organizations, and other stakeholders will have multiple opportunities to provide input and help shape the plan, as well as the future growth of the County.

The engagement process will include three public engagement meetings hosted throughout the County, a countywide resident survey to gather feedback on priorities, concerns, and future opportunities, and ongoing opportunities for community members to share ideas and perspectives.

Community input will play a critical role in ensuring the final plan reflects the values, priorities, and vision of Huron County residents.

Additional information regarding public meeting dates, survey availability, and project updates will be announced in the coming months.
